Have you ever wondered why certain words are spelt or pronounced the way they are even though it doesn’t seem logical? I was often confused as well until I stumbled on a lecture about etymology. Etymology is the study of the origin of words and how their meanings have changed throughout history.
I found this fascinating as it was revealed to me that English is a mix of other languages with “English pronunciations” and these words are rooted in primarily Greek and Latin words, and these Greek and Latin words were probably rooted in some ancient language and the cycle continues. Every time I found a word, I would search; at times it was clear, but other times I was sent down the rabbit hole to find the “original” meaning.
One word that had me more aware than ever was the word “spelling.” When I did my research, I saw lots of videos that said that this word is rooted in the word spells. When words are said negatively, it can purposefully put a curse on someone. This thought brought me back to the phrase “self-fulfilling prophesy”; you repeat something terrible about yourself, and ultimately, it becomes real. On the flip side, when words are said positively, one can essentially bless themselves and attract opportunities. This ties in with the “law of attraction” and “putting things out in the universe” which are quite popular recently. Therefore, when you say “I am…”, you are bringing blessings to yourself and attracting opportunities.
I hope you found this as interesting as I did.
I committed myself to having a monthly “day of creativity”. A day where I would disconnect all devices, be in tuned with nature and release all the words that have been forcefully oppressed. I didn’t know what day I would choose; I thought about the same day each month, but that felt too predictable, and unlike me so I decided to let my body tell me when it was time. Many times I ignored my intuition and regretted it, so now I’m all for listening.
I had booked my birthday off intending to take a trip because I don’t work on my birthday anymore (a story for a future blog). I had the day off, and I had nothing planned because I couldn’t decide on anything and I couldn’t commit an extended trip because I had a workshop the following day. The first option was to do a day trip to somewhere in the UK but there wasn’t anything that stood out enough for me to have the tourist experience plus I didn’t give myself time to research places.
Then it came to me that I should use my birthday as the day to disconnect from the interweb to brew those creative juices. It would coincide with the year 2029 and a full moon. It was indeed a great time to reconnect with ones’ self.

We need to call others out when they have done us wrong. It doesn’t have to be done in a boisterous way; however, when it’s done, the power that is accompanied with these words should change their lives forever. We need to let others know it’s not okay to disregard our existence to fulfil their daily intake of misery.

For us to create the magic we were destined to accomplish, we need to support every other genuinely. There are so many ways we can do support each other; from purchasing from businesses to saying uplifting words. Let’s do our part to make the tribe better.

At the beginning of the year, I made a vow that I would take the time to “go off the grid” to reset and realign focus on the things that are important to me. I heard of this idea when I went to a workshop last year. “It sparked creativity,” she said, and it was able to propel her in the personal and professional aspects of her life. I felt I needed to do that because I haven’t been able to write a poem in ages, and I felt shattered. All I was doing was writing for the blog, and I wanted to go back to the point where I was a creative on all levels. I did try “trials and error” days where I disconnected for a few hours, and I felt the difference. So this time I would do an entire day.
I turned off my computer, my phone and all other electronic devices (aside from my fridge). This was hard as I live in a(n) flat (apartment) that is electric. After I switched off everything, I could already feel the difference. My body was free from the electromagnetic wave, and I could begin the process of reflective and intentive meditation. I opened the windows, closed my eyes and allowed my sensory experience to commence.
It was so refreshing to consume so much of what nature had to offer. This left my brain so clear that the words were ready to be put down on paper. I would write and let the words flow; when I read it, it was as if these words were handpicked to be shared. I alternated between meditating and writing; I also created tasks for myself with deadlines and made affirmations to be said daily. After this day, I decided to make this at least a monthly thing. You should try this for it will change your life!

“I am” are the two most powerful words; however, it is misused so often. We use words to demean ourselves and others for we have been conditioned to believe that it is okay. FYI, IT. IS. NOT. OKAY!! We are amazing and thus should speak words to reflect this truth. I am magical; I am greatness; I am powerful…(and the list goes on.)

It’s always a sad day when you have to say goodbye to someone in this physical space. We take comfort in the fact that life is a cycle so with every existence there is a beginning and an end. Here’s to all the melanated heroes who have transitioned and transcended. Your legacies will remain with us always; as we can’t advance our greatness with appreciating your contributions.

I thought it! I said it out loud! I did it!
As part of my theme this year, I wanted to push myself towards writing more poetry. I convinced my friend that we should do a writing challenge; we would alternate picking themes for the month, write at least three poems and send them as voice notes or messages to each other. My friend agreed, and we went on our 2020 journey. The theme for January was “Having the Strength to Let Go,” decided by yours truly!
At the end of January; we exchanged and listened/read. I was in awe by our creativity and amazingness. I would say I’m a good poet, but my friend is an amazingly creative being. Every time I read her poems, I’m intrigued by her use of words to convey her emotion! She is truly my poetry twin aside from being one of my closest friends! We continue to inspire and motive each other when it comes to writing, and without her motivation, I wouldn’t be able to share this poem:
For the Love of Happiness
She wakes up, and I bleed
Dara Pierre
I don’t understand why she allows me to do this
She forces herself to wake up to succumb to the mental enslavement, wake up to repeat the same tasks as yesterday in the name of a job
Brain says she needs this entrapment for survival, but I disagree
For all the times we have argued, this has been the worst; a body divided, a dream destroyed
I feel weaker each day; Heart cracks and the butterflies which once occupied the stomach turned into shards wounding her from the inside.
I was on the attack to gain as many supports to defeat Brain
He thought it was a good thing for one reason; it was a job, and that job was the reason we were able to live
It was a valid point, but it was just one.
That point reiterated as if it was the only job for her
I sensed that this reason was laced with fear, for whenever I spoke about the topic, I felt attacked.
I persisted. I fought. I won.
I fought logic with logic. I offered solutions, and it was agreed upon.
I got to be happy again, Brain felt a new form of security, and she was able to move on from a place she outgrew months ago.
The Theme for February is “The Comeback,” if you want to join us!

Black don’t Crack Ambassadors (#BDCA):
Our melanated tribe continues to defy the effects of ageing. I mean; look at Miss Cicely Tyson, our reigning queen of #BDCA, and all the other amazing melanated humans who radiate the world with their beauty. This amazing trait is due to having long telomeres.
Telomeres are sequences found at the end of chromosomes; they prevent chromosome deterioration, and the fusion with other chromosomes. Studies have shown that they have been linked to ageing and diseases (long telomeres=good, and we got that!!).

Sun-kissed:
Melanated people literally need the sun to survive! Like plants, we are able to absorb sunlight for various biochemical reactions in the body. So ensure you get your daily dosage to maintain your awesomeness!

I have this friend that continually calls me a girl even though I remind them that I don’t identify with that word. They didn’t seem to understand the idea behind it, but I felt the need to explain my stance to prevent any further confusion. So the story goes like this:
“I made a conscious effort not to refer to myself as a girl anymore under any circumstances. Most people thought it was weird, but I connected the word girl with childish and finite things, and I didn’t want to associate myself with that any longer. I associated woman with growth, success, etc. and thus wanted to attract all these things, plus more, into my life.
When I made the transition from girl to woman, I had this metaphysical change. I was more willing to embrace changes as well as accomplish the goals I set out for myself. My poise changed and I became more graceful. You may not think that this was the only reason, but it was indeed the first flap in the butterfly effect. I am glad I made this decision!”
In life, you need to do what is best for you, and this was a great win for me.

TALENTED AF:
Sometimes I have to stop and be amazed at the immense talent which comes from our melanated tribe. We dominate every field and keep pushing boundaries. We just keep doing it and doing it and doing it some more!
I was scrolling through FB and I saw this video and I was more proud to be melanated!
